The two letters provide a highly detailed description of the part played by the 27th Dutch Jäger Battalion in the early stages of the Waterloo campaign. In his letter of the 26th December 1841, Willem Grunebosch outlined the movements of the French in the morning and the commencement of the fighting at Les Quatre Bras on the 16th June 1815: ‘Around half past two, and under the exclamations of “Vive l’Empereur!”, the entire enemy force led by Maréchal Ney assembled before the Bois de Frasnes, and shortly after two strong French columns, supported by masses of heavy cavalry and a numerous artillery, advanced towards our position; one to the right of the road from Charleroi to Brussels and the other more to the left, while the interval in between was covered by a swarm of Tirailleurs.’ The entire contents of this file are also available in Netherlands Correspondence #1 and Netherlands Correspondence #3.
