In his detailed letter of the 21st June 1815, Prince Frederik explained to his father, King Willem, the situation he had encountered on the 18th while with a sizeable detachment at Hal: 'On the 18th General Sir Charles Colville arrived at Hal from Braine-le-Comte, in order to support me with his division. Throughout the day we believed that we would be attacked, as during the night I had received an order from the Duke of Wellington to hold my position for as long as possible. The position I occupied was quite good and I would have maintained it in the face of the enemy for some considerable time. However, they did not honour us by attacking, but moved instead against the main army; this is remarkable, as we heard nothing. Actually, we were in a singularly good position, but if the battle had been lost I do not know where we would have ended within the country, as we were entirely separated from the main body of the army.'
