In his report of the 25th October 1815, Baron van Zuijlen van Nyevelt outlined the events on the evening of the 15th June: ‘At 9 o’clock the Prince von Sachsen-Weimar informed us that the enemy was very numerous and that he was afraid that, in case of a serious attack, he would not be strong enough to push it back. General de Perponcher gave him the order to defend the position of Quatre Bras and only to withdraw if attacked by very superior forces, in which case he was to retreat towards Mont St. Jean where he would join with the 1st Brigade. His Excellency informed him at the same time of his intention to go to Quatre Bras this very night with two battalions and to take command of that position in person. However, the General did not dare to reduce the strength of the garrison of the town before being sure that the enemy had not attacked Binche, and before the 3rd Division had relieved the troops at Nivelles.’
