The fascinating account published in 1885 provided a description of the part Martinus Rodi played during the treatment and death of Major-General Jean-Baptiste van Merlen: 'General van Merlen had been wounded and taken to a small barn. He had been struck by a cannon ball, which had entirely taken the front side of his stomach away, crushing the intestines. There was no chance of bandaging this and I covered the wound with linen. The General told me (as he was entirely conscious): "Sir, you cannot help me, but I am suffering greatly. Kill me by letting my blood." I answered: "That is forbidden, General, but do you not want something to drink, as you must be thirsty?" "Yes, but there is nothing here" he replied. It was now that the wine I had received came of good use. With pleasure the General drank from it while I was bandaging a few of the other wounded in the shed, and he passed away.'
