The fascinating report of the 13th July 1815 provides an insight into the problems the Allied army encountered in terms of logistics, and ensuring that the troops in the line were supported by the ancillary services. Karl Mergell provided details of the situation in Bruxelles when he arrived on the 18th June: 'I went to the hospital and found the ambulance wagon attached to the General Headquarters [1st Corps] and two transport wagons, with Surgeon Major Scharten, Dr. Mahlstede and my servant. Two caissons and a wagon full of wounded had been smashed during the night by the English artillery in the confusion, and despite risking their own lives it had been impossible to salvage them, as the most terrible panic had occurred on the road between Waterloo and Bruxelles. I immediately ordered  that Surgeon Scharten, who had been waiting for me, should leave again for Waterloo.’ It should be noted that the entire contents of this file are also available within the on-line archive.
