In the first of the two letters, dated the 20th June 1815, Jacobus Warin gave a detailed description of the role the 3rd Carabiniers took in the fighting during the battle of Waterloo: 'Now we received orders to advance. Having arrived in the centre of the army, the 1st Regiment charged the Cuirassiers of the Garde Impériale [sic]. The Belgians followed the movement, but veered to the right so that when we charged, or right wing could not break through. The Belgian officers hastily assembled half of their regiment and charged a second time. We fell three times upon the enemy, who were already entirely overcome after the second charge. From this moment on we had nothing more to do, except oppose the terrible cannonade for five hours. It was during this time that the Prince was wounded directly in front of our position, while the Colonel and Major of the 1st Regiment were killed.'
