The lengthy account provides a most detailed description of the attack by Comte d'Erlon's Corps: 'Towards half past two the first French line began to advance in echelon. One of the columns was marching directly towards the position we occupied. Although the earth was sodden from the rain, a hail of cannon balls was directed upon the mass. The plain formed a ravine. Our skirmishers beat a hasty retreat while firing at the enemy Tirailleurs, who preceded the French column. Our battalion opened fire as soon as the skirmishers had rejoined. The French column committed the mistake of halting and then starting to deploy. We were so near each other that Captain Henri l'Oliver (who was commanding the Grenadier Company)at this time received a ball in his arm which still had the wadding or paper from the cartridge, and which was still smoking in the cloth of his coat.'
