In his highly detailed letter of the 10th July 1815, Hendrik Holle provided an account of the involvement of the 6th Dutch Militia Battalion during the attack by the Moyenne Garde and the climax of the fighting at Waterloo on Sunday 18th June: ‘Within moments we formed closed columns and went into the first line with our 1st Brigade (the only one from our division of the army on that day, and not as the report by the Duke of Wellington incorrectly states of d’Aubremé, but of Colonel Detmers), the attack was beaten and our army advanced. Our brave colonel was killed with some twenty others, however this did not cause confusion as the senior captain took the command and I the command of his division. We endured a most horrific canister fire, but luckily they fired too high, or otherwise we would have been destroyed.’ The entire contents of this file are also available in Netherlands Correspondence #2 and Netherlands Correspondence #3.
