In his fascinating account of circa 1865 Hendrik Heuving provided details of the part played by the 4th Dutch Light Dragoons Regiment in  the Waterloo campaign and during the battle on Sunday 18th June 1815. He recounted the severe  losses sustained by the Netherlands cavalry, as well as giving details of  the engagements: 'Having escaped from this dangerous peril, a new and no less  dangerous one now presented itself. To my right, around a hundred and fifty paces away, I noticed a small troop of French infantry, forming in square. I could clearly hear the commander of the enemy troop call out to his men: "Now my children, courage. The battle is ours!" My God! I thought, could the French have won the battle? I was unwilling to be within their reach. Where is our army? One can imagine how my courage failed me. Yet, my curiosity overcame my fear and dispondency.' It should be noted that the entire contents of this file are also available within the on-line archive.
