In his letter of the 14th December 1841, Baron von Gagern recalled the occurrences of the 15th June 1815 and the reaction to the news of the French advance: ‘General Perponcher issued the order to concentrate the 1st Brigade at Nivelles in case of an alarm; and to stay on the road from Nivelles to Bruxelles; he did not know how to take responsibility to withdraw troops from that road, by sending reinforcements to Quatre Bras, therefore, I was immediately sent to the main headquarters in Braine-le-Comte to ask for instructions. The Prince of Orange was in Bruxelles. General Constant-Rebècque, to whom I gave my report, had difficulty in believing what I was telling him, especially the evacuation of the road from Charleroi to Bruxelles by the Prussians, which he did not believe was probable.’ The entire contents of this file are also available in Netherlands Correspondence #1 and Netherlands Correspondence #3. |
