In his detailed account of the Waterloo campaign and the role of the troops in the 3rd Netherlands Division, Frederik van Omphal recalled the repulse of the attack by the Garde Impériale at the climax of the battle on Sunday 18th June 1815: 'The time had arrived; the General thought that he could not remain idle, although he had received no orders from Lord Hill. He placed himself at the head of the 1st Brigade of his division, which he manoeuvred in such a way that the head of its column was opposite the one attacking, when a height was reached, which had hidden our troops until this moment. This unexpected engagement stopped their advance and in turn they were attacked and repulsed. This movement soon changed into a rout and the enemy column dissolved. The 1st Brigade, which had remained in its position throughout this time now received orders from General Chassé to advance and to participate in the attack by forming in column.'
