In his highly detailed account of the events, circa 1843, Franciscus Leicher described the situation when during the course of the battle of Waterloo, he encountered a former comrade in arms among the thousands of French wounded: 'During the heaviest of the fighting, when I advanced too far forward of the line, and I neared the ground where we had previously had to repel an attack from the enemy Tirailleurs, I heard my name shouted in a woeful tone, and although being a soldier and aware of my duties, I could not ignore the voice of humanity, and rushed towards the wailing. "My God!" what a sight greeted my eyes and my heart. An old friend of mine lay severely wounded near his brother, who had been shot in two. He turned over in the river of blood. To refuse help to a friend like Capitaine Grandjuan, Aide-de-camp to Maréchal Ney, was unbearable to me; I had him carried to the rear of our line and then hastily returned to my post.'
