In his letter, circa December 1835, Ludwig Wirths recalled the fighting at Waterloo: ‘The 2nd Battalion was ordered to take its position behind the farm of la Haye, fronting the farm on the small height leading gently down towards it, forming from there the extreme left wing of the army, in close columns. Just a little in rear of this position an English light dragoon regiment arrived. The 3rd Battalion was sent forward towards the farm of Papelotte. In this position, obliquely opposite to the enemy’s right wing battery; the 2nd Battalion received an assault from several 8 pounders from the same battery, which injured and killed some of the men. Just at the beginning of the affair, the 2nd Flanquer Company, which was under the command of 1st Lieutenant Fuchs, was sent forward to the farm of la Haye to operate against the artillery on the enemy’s right wing and to prevent it from moving on to our left wing.’
