On 3rd January 1816, Emil Bergmann wrote: 'On the 17th we stood close to Quatre Bras, and I believed that after the events of the 16th almost all of the Jägers had exhausted their powder and ammunition. This was unfortunately confirmed during an inspection of the troops. On this day we retreated to Waterloo, and towards evening our brigade was ordered to deploy in the battle line. I believed that we would be engaged with the enemy’s advance guard, and so I gave the order to those Jägers with ammunition to advance, while those without ammunition retired with 1st Lieutenant von Bierbrauer. I had been placed in an awkward position; I understood perfectly well that this decision was not entirely acceptable, but I moved with 2nd Lieutenant Schnabelius and between 10 and 12 Jägers to a position close to Frischermont.’ The entire contents of this file are also available in Nassau Correspondence #1. |
