The report provides a description of the part played by the Nassau troops. In his highly detailed report of the 28th December 1835, Carl Rettberg recalled the defence of the farms of Papelotte, la Haye and the hamlet of Smohain by the Nassau troops during the Battle of Waterloo on Sunday 18th June 1815: ‘Between 11 and 12 o’clock in the morning the enemy artillery batteries deployed opposite our position along with their ammunition wagons. One of the first cannon shots injured Major Hegmann and Captain Frensdorf succeeded to the command. Between 12 and 1 o’clock the line of enemy artillery advanced towards Papelotte. Prince von Sachsen-Weimar sent me and my company, the 3rd Flanquer, to confront them. Shortly thereafter, a detachment from the Orange-Nassau Regiment occupied the villages of Smohain and la Haye and I established communication with this detachment.' The small sketches with the report have not been reproduced.
