In his report of the 21st June 1815, August von Kruse recalled the fighting on Sunday 18th June at the climax of the battle: ‘At this moment the 1st Battalion wavered under the terrible fire the French artillery poured into them with their canister. The Cuirassiers, who were quite near, charged and took several prisoners, among whom were the two brave Captains Schüller and Waitz [Weiz]. However, this encounter had weakened the French cavalry very much and it withdrew, and it was replaced by the elite of the infantry, Napoleon’s Garde Impériale, which advanced to capture the plateau, from which our infantry withdrew only 100 paces. A violent fire with small arms commenced, during which the Crown Prince, who had commanded on the plateau throughout the battle, and who had shown as much courage as foresight, attempted to resolve with a bayonet charge.’ The map with this report has not been reproduced.
