In his report of the 11th November 1824, Wilhelm von Dörnberg gave a detailed description of the position the outposts from the brigade under his command occupied on the evening of the 17th June 1815: ‘I received the order to establish outposts in front of the right wing of the army as far as the highroad, which led from Brussels to Charleroi. The picquets had to be strong, because the enemy's army had pursued close on our heels and stood on the heights opposite. Therefore, I took 3 squadrons; one from the 23rd Light Dragoons, one from the 2nd Light Dragoons, and one from the Cumberland Hussars, positioning the last of these in front of a small wood which was on our right; that from the 2nd Light Dragoons was deployed in a hollow in front of the middle of the right wing, while that from the 23rd Light Dragoons took a position on the highroad itself, in the low ground between the farm of La Haye Sainte and Belle Alliance.’
