The report, which is undated (although written on the 1st July 1815), provides a detailed insight into the difficulties encountered during the course of the evening at Mont St. Jean on Sunday 18th June 1815, due to the confusion arising from the latter stages of the battle of Waterloo: 'On the 18th an English officer brought me the order to retire. I do not know the officer, nor did I know the Major-General who commanded the division. The bad weather had kept the latter from visiting the brigade, which was stationed in and around Halle, and which would soon be led to meet the enemy, and thus from being able to present himself and his adjutants to the brigade. The order was delivered in a hurried and inappropriate manner. The officer addressed me in English, but when I let him know that I do not understand English, he shouted at me from a distance of 40 paces, 'Retirez-vous', and pointed to the high road, whereupon he hurried away.'
