The two reports provide a detailed description of the Waterloo campaign. In his report of the 4th December 1824, Carl von Scriba recalled the fighting in the Bois de la Hutte on the morning of the 17th June 1815: ‘At daybreak the enemy forced a passage into the wood mentioned previously, and in strength attacked the Grubenhagen Light Infantry Battalion, which was posted there. However, after half an hour of heavy skirmish fire, the enemy was repulsed. I suspected that this one isolated attack would precede a general attack on our position, and hardly had a quarter of an hour elapsed when we, too, were attacked by a significant force. The company on picquet duty was withdrawn to the battalion. It was approaching four o’clock. Our position offered us several advantages, and we were able to defend ourselves with determination and success.’ The series of sketches which adorn the two reports have not been reproduced.
