In his letter dated the 9th July 1815 Augustus Winckler gave a detailed description of the fighting during the Battle of Waterloo, and the role of the battalion as the Allied army advanced at the climax: 'Our divisional general, Sir Henry Clinton, led us up the ridge, the highest I could see, to about 200 paces from the enemy line, which consisted of Grenadiers de la Garde Impériale. Several batteries poured a terrible fire upon us to try and drive us back from this important position. A number of English regiments, along with battalions of the Legion had already been driven back after losing half thier men and nearly all their officers. There was a copse to our right from which our sharpshooters and the Highlanders engaged the enemy. To our left were several batteries of English and Belgian artillery, whose fire was well directed. Further to the left, several English regiments and Hanoverian battalions were engaged with the enemy.' The contents of this file are within the on-line archive.
