The report provides a highly detailed description of the involvement of the 4th Hanoverian Foot Battery in the campaign, from the beginning of the fighting on the 15th June, through until the morning of the 19th June 1815. In his report of the 25th November 1824, Andreas Cleeves recalled the part the battery played on Sunday 18th June 1815: ‘At around 11 o’clock we discovered a compact enemy infantry column of between 3,000 and 4,000 men, moving forward towards the wood of Hougemont through the meandering cavities and high corn fields. When they were about 700 to 800 paces from us I ordered the battery to fire (the first canon shots of the battle). The effect of the fire, accompanied by the guns under Major Lloyd and Kuhlmann, was great and was followed by the complete dispersion of the enemy column. The Prince of Orange and General von Alten were present at this time. They acclaimed this ominous overture.’
