In his highly detailed letter of the 13th August 1815, Fritz Köhler recalled the terrible scenes at the conclusion of the Battle of Waterloo on the evening of Sunday 18th June 1815, and the awful suffering the troops of the Brunswick Corps had endured during the short campaign: ‘Alas, dear friends, many parents will be happy when they are told that their children will come back, but others will feel pain. It is sad for those concerned, and some will return to their fatherland as cripples. Think for once how very sad this is. It was sad for me that I had to walk over my brothers, groaning and swimming in their own blood. Please God keep us from these terrible experiences, so that we do not have to return to such a thing. I for one do not wish to go through the same again. Leipzig was a heavy battle, but many more cannon featured in this one, and consequently the fire was beyond all description.’ The contents of this file are available in Brunswick Correspondence #1.
