The letter provides a highly detailed description of the death of his elder brother, Lieutenant-Colonel Rudolph von Heinemann of the Brunswick General Staff. In the letter, dated the 4th July 1815 to his sister, Ernst von Heinemann recalled: 'When Olfermann was wounded and forced to retire, Rudolph assumed the command of the corps, and was exposed on the left wing, close to the square formed by the 2nd Brunswick Line Battalion, to the murderous  musket fire. As victory in the battle became a reality, Lord Wellington ordered us to deploy from our squares into line and to advance. Rudolph, wrapped in his grey cloak and riding a Hussar's horse, because his grey had been shot from beneath him earlier in the day, stretched out his hand to issue orders, when a musket ball hit him in the throat or the heart. He made a last movement with his right hand towards his throat and then fell from his horse.' The entire contents of this file are available within the on-line archive.
