The tragic letter provides a detailed description of the Waterloo campaign. In his letter of the 22nd June 1815, Anton Kubel recalled the events of the 18th June and the involvement of the 3rd Line Battalion: ‘We had to guard part of the centre and the left wing, and so our whole front was within their firing range. Throughout the whole morning we were in the third line, pressed deep into a depression and suffered little from the artillery fire. We then moved into the second line, where we stood fairly well covered; but when we formed the first line, a little after midday, even our oldest officers admitted that they had never experienced such cannon fire. We, that is our Brunswick infantry, advanced in eight squares, in which there were a few Hanoverians, and we repelled four attacks from French Lanciers Rouges, who charged our batteries, and were greeted by a tremendous salvo.’ It should be noted that the contents of this file are also available within the new on-line archive.
