In his highly detailed letter of the 19th June 1815, Thomas Wildman provided a vivid description of the event that had occurred during the days previous and in particular the fighting at Mont St. Jean during the battle of Waterloo on Sunday 18th: 'Several times I believe all hopes were given up by everyone except the Duke of W. who said we will beat them yet before night. This cavalry and Infantry were enmêlée  with our people, some of our gunes in the midst of them & in our position, but were driven back with enormous slaughter. Just about sunset they were preparing a last effort of attack when Lord U. brought up Sir H. Vivian's brigade supported by Sir J. Vandeleur's in a second line. They moved immediately to the front of the position & formed line on the brow of the Hill from whence they charged down upon the enemy, taking two squares of Infantry & a column of cavalry in their way.' The file contains extensive genealogical and details of Thomas Wildman's military service.
