In his highly detailed letter of the 31st July 1815, Standish O'Grady provided a description of the fierce fighting at Genappe between the French cavalry and the 7th Hussars: 'Lord Uxbridge gave us the word 6 with one Squadron of the 7th we charged the Head of their whole Cavalry- their front were Lancers- their flanks were protected for they were in the Street & the mass of Cavalry in the rear was so great that I defy them to go about. They therefore stood firm. We killed the officer who was in front but we could not reach the men as the lancers of the front and rear kept the men at Bay. We did not however relinquish our Efforts even after every Endeavour had become useless, & I shall ever esteem the greatest Honour I can boast to have belonged to that Squadron who died in their Ranks rather than relinquish the attack.' The file  contains  genealogical information and  details of Standish O'Grady's military service, and the full contents are within the new on-line archive.
