The two unedited accounts provide highly detailed descriptions of the Waterloo campaign and the fighting during the defense of Hougoumont on Sunday the 18th June 1815, and the unsuccessful storming of the fortress of Bergen-op-Zoom on the 8th  March 1814. In his account of the Battle of Waterloo and the epic struggle at Hougoumont, circa 1854, Matthew Clay wrote: ‘Having entering the Courtyard I saw Lieutenant-Colonel McDonald [sic] carrying a large piece of wood or trunk of a tree in his arms, one of his cheeks was marked with Blood, his Charger lay dying a short distance off, with which he was hastening to secure the Gates against the renewed attack of the Enemy, which was most vigorously repulsed.’ In addition to the two unedited accounts the file also contains extensive new  genealogical information as well as details of Matthew Clay’s military service. The contents of this file are also available in British Correspondence #1.
