In his letter of the 2nd July 1815, Lord Greenock provided a detailed account of the Battle of Waterloo on Sunday 18th June, and the performance of the Duke of Wellington in relation to his illustrious adversary: ‘The morning of the 18th, the enemy remained quiet, but towards the middle of the day their movements plainly indicated an intention of attacking, which they accordingly did, and gave the Duke an opportunity of gaining the most splendid and important victory that has almost ever been recorded in the annals of history. Napoleon and the Duke were for the first time opposed to each other and the superiority of the latter as a general and of troops under his command were most conspicuously displayed.’ In addition to the letter the file contains extensive new genealogical information and details of Lord Greenock’s military service record. The entire contents of this file are also available in British Correspondence #2.
