John Sinclair
This file contains a typeset copies of nine contemporary letters, six of which were from Captain John Sinclair, 79th (or Cameron Highlanders) Regiment of Foot, which have been transcribed from the original manuscripts.

The various letters mark the last few months of John Sinclair's life, he being mortally wounded in the right breast at Les Quatre Bras on the 16th June 1815. The sorrow that was to befall the young officer was not evident in any of his letters, and that written from Belfast on the 28th March 1815 displayed no thoughts, other than to continue in the pursuit of his military career: 'How soon are all my fine prospects and flattering hopes blasted, by the escape of that Destroyer of Mankind who has so easily again obtained possession of the thone of France. This you will see, and also sorry am I to say that we are again to commence the war with, if possible, redoubled vigour. It appears every regiment in England are under orders for Flanders and I am afraid they will not forget us, although our remote situation may keep us here for some time.' In addition to the letters the file also contains extensive new genealogical information and details of John Sinclair's military service. |
