The letters provide a highly detailed description of the death of his brother, Sir Francis D'Oyly, 2nd Battalion, 1st Regiment of Foot Guards, and the disposal of his uniforms and equipment in the usual manner: 'With respect to Francis, I believe I answered all your questions in my last letter to my mother, who put the same to me. His medals were given for the battles of Salamanca, Vittoria (as the English spell it, though the proper way is Vitoria), the battles of the Pyrenes, the Nivelles & Orthes. You certainly may state him to have served in Spain as Field Officer. At Waterloo he commanded the 2nd Batt. 1st Guards some hours before he was killed. Lt-Col. [Richard] Cooke who commanded it in the beginning of that day having been wounded & carried off early in the action.' In addition to the letters the file contains detailed genealogical information and the military service of both officers.
