In his highly detailed letter of the 7th July 1815, George Barlow explained the situation at Les Quatre Bras on the 16th June, when the regiment lost one of its Colours: 'In the course of manoeuvring the 69th for a moment found itself at the bottom of one of these little dips, and being formed in Squares was perfectly secure; a certain personage who shall remain nameless sent down an order that the 69th should deploy into lin; it was obeyed, and scarcely done when a strong body of French Cuirassiers showed themselves close in rear of our flank: we happened to be in a small hollow and the heights [sic] of the surrounding corn precluded a view of everything beyond the above distances. The Enemy approached close to the Regt. unperceived; and rushed out as from an ambuscade on the flank of the line.'  In addition to the letter the file  contains  genealogical information and  full details of George Barlow’s military service.
