The letter provides a highly detailed description of the fighting in the wood and buildings at Hougoumont during the Battle of Waterloo, and of the jealousy within the Brigade of Guards following the distribution of awards in the aftermath of the campaign. On the 9th December 1816, Francis Home explained to Sir Adam Ferguson: ‘With regard to my name being mentioned for Col Hepburn’s whatever Mr Scott’s authority may be, and I am aware that some officers of rank in the Guards from which member, however, I pointedly except Col Hepburn have said so, I beg leave to say that this is perfectly impossible. I have stated some reasons above. But I now add that Col Hepburn never did lead our Regt to drive Jerome from the wood.’ In addition to the letter the file contains extensive new genealogical information and details of Francis Home’s military service. The entire contents of this file are also available in British Correspondence #1.
