The two letters provide a detailed description of the Battle of Waterloo and the defence of Hougoumont. In his letter of the 17th September 1815, Francis Hepburn explained to Walter Scott: ‘The battle of Waterloo has made such a noise in England that I think it right you should know how I was employed on that day, so I beg you will overlook and excuse the egotism you may find in this letter. I suppose you have seen a plan of the action. For the first hour I remained with my Battn in close column upon the heights of St. Jean, under a galling fire of shot & shell, when I was sent down to the Orchard & wood of Hougoumont, which was attacked by the whole of Jerome’s Corps. Here I commanded & was warmly engaged for the rest of the day.’ In addition to the letters the file contains extensive  genealogical information and details of Francis Hepburn’s military service. It should be noted that the contents of this file are  also available within the on-line archive.
