In his letter of the 11th June 1839, Fiennes Miller provide a highly detailed description of the decisive charge by the British cavalry during the Battle of Waterloo, and the situation in the immediate aftermath: ‘When we took (up) our position on the 18th, the Royals were formed on the right, the Inniskillings on the left, the Greys in reserve, and so formed we charged. I commanded the left squadron, Madox the right, and Holbeck's and Douglas' the Troops. In charging the French Column I was bayonetted in two places slightly, and lost my horse. In returning to the rear I met Sergeant Small, who had lost his own horse and was leading one which had belonged to a French Officer of Lancer's, and on that I rode with Lancers appointments, for the rest of the day.’ In addition to the letters the file contains extensive genealogical information and details of Fiennes Miller’s military service. It should also be noted that the entire contents of this file are also available within the on-line archive.
