In his highly detailed letter of the 6th July 1815, Edward Kelly described the fighting between the cavalry during the battle of Waterloo on Sunday 18th June 1815, and in particular the events surrounding the engagement between the British Life Guards and the French Cuirassiers, in which he killed a French Colonel and removed his epaulettes in the midst of the battle: 'I offered the French Colonel's Epaulettes to Lord Uxbridge, but he said he could not think of depriving my family of them. I got his horse also - a most noble one - but being attacked by a number of French at the same time, I was obliged to let him go and should have been killed but for our Corpl-Major who fought bravely by my side till we laid them down never to rise again. I have mentioned him to Lord Harington.' In addition to the letter the file contains extensive genealogical information and the  details of Edward Kelly's military service.
