The letters provide a highly detailed description of the situation in Brussels in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Waterloo on Sunday the 18th June 1815, as well as a short list of the officers in the three regiments of Foot Guards who had been killed or who had died, along with details of the care being given to the wounded. In his letter of the 28th June 1815, Edward Bowater explained to his brother-in-law: ‘Nothing can equal the attention we receive here. The people of Brussels look up to us for having saved their city from pillage, which no doubt would have been the case had we been bested. I never saw so hard a fight. Talavera was the hottest fire I ever had been in, but it was a joke to what I saw of this.’ In addition to the two letters the file contains extensive new genealogical information and details of Edward Bowater’s military service record. The entire contents of this file are also available in British Correspondence #1.
