In his highly detailed letter of the 25th June 1815, Donald Finlayson provided his associate, Mr. Sommerville, with a tragic account of the fighting at Les Quatre Bras on the 16th June: 'As we were formed into solid square on the 16th, Captain Haigh was killed with a cannon ball as he was most coolly and gallantly encouraging his men and directing them how to act. His brother, Lieutenant Haigh, was close by and saw him fall and his bowels gush out. He exclaimed "Oh! kill me with him!" I endeavoured to console him and said it might soon be our fate. He has since had his wished fulfilled, being shot through the neck on the 18th and dying soon after. They have a father in the regiment. Young Captain Haigh was a very meritous young man. Pardon me this slight notice of some of our brave companions who have fallen in the defence of freedom to avert the battle from our doors and maintain us in the possession of our rights.'
