The three letters provide a detailed description of the events in Brussels prior to the Waterloo campaign, and of the situation in Paris following the Allied occupation of the capital. In his letter of the 3rd April 1815, Charles Dashwood explained to his father: ‘England already nearly ruined will have to support the Expense of the war. The first view of the thing was very different, now the situation of France is changed, and if it were possible to suppose Bonaparte quiet, I think it might be policy to leave him where he is – so much for politics. The Events here may change from day to day. If Bonaparte sees himself unable to get Austria over to his cause or unable to be recognised by the Allies, he will not delay to pay us a visit.’ In addition to the various letters the file contains extensive new genealogical information and details of Charles Dashwood’s military service. The entire contents of this file are also available in British Correspondence #1.
